Making a difference, every day

PE

Intent

At Edwalton Primary School we aim to promote and provide all our pupils with the opportunity to enhance their sporting experiences though an enriched PE curriculum and through extra-curricular clubs and activities. We pride ourselves in the opportunities we give to all our children to take part in PE and school sport in a fun and challenging environment.

The children are taught to value exercise and a healthy active lifestyle and encouraged to see physical activity as a way of enriching their lives both in and out of school.

We seek to provide links to community clubs as an outlet for further development in focus sports.

Implementation

Each child receives 2 hours of structured physical activity per week. The children cover a wide range of activities in their PE lessons following a programme of activity which allows progression through the Key Stages.

Children have the opportunity to develop their skills further in extra-curricular clubs and inter-school competitions.

In foundation and early Key stage 1, the children begin by following a series of fundamental movement skills in their PE lessons which are designed to develop their core motor skills through a series of developmental activities. Focus areas include:

  • Travelling/Stabilising
  • Travelling/Movement control/Core strength development
  • Movement control with co-ordination
  • Movement control with running and jumping
  • Object control
  • Object control with movement control
  • Spatial awareness
  • Hand/eye co-ordination

These skills, once developed, are then transferred in to more specific activities related to game play and different game categories including striking and fielding, invasion, net and wall.

The activities become more challenging as the children progress up through the year groups and the small sided games move on to more recognised versions of traditional games including basketball, netball, hockey, rugby, rounders, cricket and tennis.

The children also cover athletic activities, gymnastics and dance as well as swimming from Years 4-6. They also have a unit of work on health-related fitness

Impact

On reaching year 6 children are well equipped to meet the necessary competences in a range of activity so that when they move to secondary school they have a solid foundation in a variety of sports.

We continue to be successful at partnership events with medals in many of the competitions entered.  This demonstrates the high skill acquisition our children reach through their programme of activity, opportunities at clubs and exposure to community clubs and further coaching.

We have had National representation at cross country, we have qualified for County finals in tag rugby and handball. We have represented Rushcliffe borough at the School Games after winning cluster schools events in basketball, tri golf, hockey and netball. We have won medals at indoor rowing, football, basketball, athletics, cross country team relays and hockey

We have healthy attendance at after school clubs and intra/inter competitions with all children having the opportunity to access these. The sports covered are extensive. The percentage of non-swimmers leaving year 6 is very low due to interventions and 1 to 1 coaching in the water.

We have extensive links to community clubs:

  • Cricket – Notts CC & Keyworth CC
  • Golf – Edwalton GC
  • Hockey – Boots HC
  • Rugby – Nottingham RC
  • Canoeing - Holme PP Canoe club and British Canoeing
  • Tennis – West Bridgford Tennis Club
